Does my Child need a Tutor?

The decision to seek out tutoring for your child is always challenging. We all want our children to have good grades and excel in school. But at some point in the parenting journey you may be faced with the need to find help for a child struggling with school assignments, tests, or homework.

We at Matheaze Tutors are well positioned to support you and your family during this stage. We have excellent tutors that are not only highly qualified but also care about the overall success and validation of your child.

As a parent myself, I know how important it is to stay in tune with the performance of my kids. Since we work closely with parents I will like to share with you some information that could help. Often times the academic struggles of students stem from varying factors such as interest in the subject/topic or if they have a great relationship with their school teachers.  Many parents ignore these signs hoping that the issues resolve themselves. From experience I know this is not the case. Here are signs to watch for in determining if you should give us a call.

  1. Lack of desire to do homework. At Matheaze Tutors, we help students work through their homework if they are experiencing challenges in completing them. Our goal is to equip our students with the tools and skills to not only complete the assignment but also develop the discipline. It is a known fact that students who do not want to do their homework have difficulty with either the subject or the teacher. Getting a qualified tutor for your child will help ease out this difficulty
  2. Undesirable or Failing grades. A bad grade is a touchy subject and a red flag that no parent wants for their child. Sometimes it may not be entirely the fault of your child. At the point that a student start getting a failing grade, he or she could have either lost interest in the subject or class or become too discouraged to try.
  3. Avoiding School. This sign is common with students who tend to “fall sick” on specific school days that could be tied to specific subject. At Matheaze Tutors, we encourage our tutors, with the parent’s permission, to establish a relationship with their students’ current teachers to allow for collaboration. The purpose of this collaboration is to help the students achieve their academic goals and in some instances, exceed them.
  4. Low Self-confidence. The relationship between academic success and confidence is one that should not be taken lightly. Lack of confidence in a particular class or subject may have nothing to do with the current teacher but instead may be a conflict between the students’ learning styles and the expectations from their teachers. At Matheaze Tutors, our tutors understand that their role is not just to convey information but also to help their students build confidence in the areas where there is a tutoring need.
  5. Anxiety. Students experience anxiety in different situations. For some, the anxiety is because of a particular subject (most students display this with Math) or a specific test. We observe test anxiety mostly with standardized testing (ACT/SAT/GRE). At Matheaze, we work with the students to understand the sources and reasons for their anxieties to help provide tools that help overcome their anxieties.
  6. Doing well in school but bored. Most parents see tutoring as necessary only for students who are struggling. However, available research actually shows that students who achieve academic excellence in standardized tests and school tests got extra tutoring outside their school time.   Some students are not struggling in school or with any of their classes and do not feel challenged by the materials that are being discussed in their classes. For some students, this may actually cause them to lose interest in their academics or become lackadaisical about achieving their goals. Some students skip school because they do not feel they are learning anything in their classes. To combat this, we have customized sessions for these types of students where they are given tasks, assignments, or tests that will challenge them beyond the content covered in their classes/schools.
  7. Learning disabilities. Students with learning disabilities usually need a one-on-one session that helps address the information in a way that is customized to their learning style. This is not usually available in a regular school setting as the teacher has to address the needs of the other students in their classes. We provide customized tutoring sessions for our students to ensure that the tutors are meeting the needs of their students.
  8. Hopelessness. Any of the other signs if unaddressed can lead to hopelessness not just on the part of the students but the parents as well. As an organization, we view our mission as not only to provide academic help but also to bring hope to situations that may seem hopeless. We have an expectation of our tutors to inspire their students to achieve their goals. Our tutors are all encouraged to provide additional assignments or information that could help simplify the material that the student is struggling with.

We hope the above information has helped you as you make the decision to engage us as your child’s tutor. We take pride in our results and continue to receive positive feedback from our parents.
