Understanding Exponents

Exponents are a shorthand for the repeated multiplication of the same by itself a number of times. For example:

image002  is read 7 raised to the 3rd power is 7 × 7 × 7.

7 is the base number and 3 is the exponent.

There are several rules available for the simplification of exponents.
