Your Child Took the October PSAT. What Happens Next?

Across the country, high schoolers spent part of October in gyms and classrooms taking the PSAT/NMSQT on laptops and tablets. If your child was one of them, you may be wondering what the test actually counts for, when the scores arrive, and what you are supposed to do with them. Here is a clear picture of what happens next.

When PSAT Scores Come Out

Schools choose their own test day inside the October 1 to 30 window, so score release depends on when your child tested and when their answers were submitted. For fall 2026, College Board’s schedule looks like this:

  • Answers submitted by October 9: scores available to students on October 22, 2026.
  • Answers submitted by October 23: scores available on November 5, 2026.
  • Answers submitted by October 30: scores available on November 12, 2026.

Students age 13 and older who provided a mobile number on test day can view their scores in the BigFuture School app. Otherwise, your child’s school or counselor can share the score report directly.

How to Read the Score Report

The digital PSAT/NMSQT has two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, and takes about 2 hours and 14 minutes. The test is adaptive: each section is split into two modules, and the questions in the second module adjust based on how your child did in the first. The total score lands on a 320 to 1520 scale.

Beyond the number itself, the score report shows section scores, percentiles, and a knowledge-and-skills breakdown that points to specific strengths and gaps. That breakdown is the most useful part of the report, because it turns one test day into a concrete study plan for the SAT.

What the PSAT Means for National Merit

For juniors, the October PSAT/NMSQT doubles as the entry test for the 2028 National Merit Scholarship Program. A separate number on the report, the NMSC Selection Index (48 to 228), determines who moves forward. From each year’s entrants, about 50,000 high scorers earn recognition: roughly 34,000 are named Commended Students and about 16,000 become Semifinalists, with notifications going through high schools in late September of the following year. Semifinalists can advance to Finalist standing and compete for National Merit $2,500 scholarships plus corporate- and college-sponsored awards.

One reassurance for everyone else: colleges never receive your child’s actual PSAT scores. Scores go to the student, the school, and in many cases the district and state. The test is a low-stakes rehearsal, not an admissions factor.

5 Smart Next Steps for Families

  1. Make sure your child can access their scores. Confirm they can open the BigFuture School app or know when their school will hand out reports.
  2. Read the report together. Celebrate what went well first, then look at the knowledge-and-skills section for one or two specific areas to strengthen.
  3. Practice with official tools. Full-length adaptive practice tests live in the Bluebook app, and Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy is free. Both match the real digital format.
  4. Pencil in an SAT date. Juniors often target the spring of junior year: upcoming Saturday dates include March 6, May 1, and June 5, 2027. Scores from weekend tests typically arrive two to four weeks after test day.
  5. Keep perspective. For 9th and 10th graders, the PSAT is a baseline. For juniors, it is a scholarship opportunity and a dress rehearsal. Either way, it is information, not a verdict.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PSAT scored like the SAT?

Almost. The PSAT/NMSQT uses a 320 to 1520 scale, slightly lower than the SAT’s 400 to 1600, because the questions are calibrated to a younger grade level. A PSAT score is a good predictor of what a student would earn on the SAT on the same day.

Do colleges see PSAT scores?

No. College Board does not send actual PSAT/NMSQT scores to colleges. Scores go to students, schools, and in many cases districts and states, and juniors’ results are shared with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for the scholarship competition.

When will we hear about National Merit?

Not for a while. Students recognized as Commended Students or Semifinalists are notified through their high schools in late September of the year after they test. For October 2026 test-takers, that means September 2027.

Should my child start SAT prep now?

Once the score report arrives, yes, at least lightly. The skills breakdown shows exactly where practice will pay off, and free official practice in Bluebook and on Khan Academy makes it easy to start with 20 or 30 minutes a week.

The Bottom Line

The PSAT is behind your child, and the scores are on their way. Use the report as a roadmap: celebrate the strengths, pick one or two growth areas, and build a calm, steady plan toward the SAT.
